Association Management Client: OSAP (Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention)

Etherio has a fully dedicated staff managing the OSAP (Organization for Safety, Asepsis, and Prevention) Association. For more than 5 years, Etherio has successfully grown awareness, membership, industry trust, and secured grant funding, all under the cloud of Covid-19. Outlined below is one example of the many ways Etherio’s OSAP team has advanced the mission of oral health and safety in this country.

Brief Description: More than 20 years ago, the OSAP, in cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Oral Health (DOH), produced an 8-minute educational DVD, “If Saliva Were Red (ISWR),” along with a detailed training guide.

• This DVD was used in dental, hygiene, and dental assisting schools across the country to emphasize the importance of standard infection control precautions that apply to all patient care.
• While anecdotal, those who have recently graduated can vividly remember watching the ISWR video in class and the impact the highly visual demonstration of cross-contamination in the dental environment had on their practice of dentistry.

Objective: Reproduce the video to be more relevant, current, and evergreen.

Solution: In 2022, Etherio’s OSAP team secured grant funding from CareQuest Institute for Oral Health to reproduce the video, and to provide the video, resources, and CE credit free of charge to all healthcare providers worldwide (the DVD had to be purchased)

• The ISWR video was developed by a team of OSAP and CDC DOH dental infection prevention and safety subject matter experts (SMEs).
• OSAP hired AEGIS Communications to produce the video. AEGIS has an extensive oral healthcare platform that provides the entire dental team and students with a comprehensive collection of accessible, high–quality, purposeful content designed to enhance their practice and patient care. AEGIS assisted in developing storyboards and conducting post-editing to enhance the visual cues needed to clearly demonstrate the messaging of the educational material.
• OSAP utilized the Dentsply Sirona teaching facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, to film the video, ensuring the appropriate equipment and tools were in place. (Dentsply Sirona is one of OSAP’s Super Sponsors)
• OSAP secured actors from diverse backgrounds in both race and gender who are licensed dental professionals to ensure they are following proper protocol. Going against past norms, the dental hygienist was male, and the dentist was female.

In January 2023, the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP) released the updated and revamped If Saliva Were Red

This compelling 5-minute video uses real dental healthcare personnel (DHCP) to highlight:

• common dental infection control and safety flaws
• the cross-contamination DHCP would see if saliva were red, and
• how controlling contamination by using personal barrier protection, safe work practices, and effective infection control products, reduces the risk of exposure.

Produced without a voice track, the video uses visual rather than verbal cues to stress the need for procedure-specific dental infection control. It is a suitable training tool for classrooms and practices worldwide, regardless of native language.

OSAP also created How to Tell the Story: A Facilitator’s Guide. This guide provides facilitators, educators, consultants, and in-practice instructors with visual cues and talking points from the video, answers to common questions, a checklist of the elements of a comprehensive dental personnel training program, and a list of resources. The guide is available in both English and Spanish

OSAP is also providing 1 hour of ADA CERP CE credit for FREE to everyone (members and non-members)

The Etherio marketing and communications team did the graphic design for the Facilitator’s Guide, created a teaser video, drip email campaign, social media toolkit, and email graphics.

Results after 6 months:

• The video has had more than 43,000 views
• The facilitator’s guide has been downloaded 5,000 times
• 1,690 oral healthcare professionals have claimed CE credits
